Detroit!

Detroit was awesome! We worked with Cass Community Social Services and Cass Community United Methodist in Detroit. Working with them was the experience of a lifetime. Cass Community is doing beautiful things for the people of Detroit. Each day we worked two different jobs, one in the morning, and one in the afternoon. On Monday we started the day off shredding paper in a warehouse. The job is usually done by mentally disabled adults, but we helped them out! The paper came from different companies who paid Cass Community to shred their confidential files. It was sorted by color, confidential/nonconfidential, and thickness! That afternoon we went to the Activity Center where we danced, sang, played games, put together puzzles, and hung out with disabled adults from the community. It was such a joy to be able to spend time with them! On Tuesday we spent the day outside! I got to mow, with a push mower at that!! (this is normally not exciting for teenagers, but with the fact that dad never lets me mow, this was super exciting!)  After mowing we pulled weeds and cleaned up an alleyway next to one of the buildings that Cass Community was fixing up to use for permanent housing for people that had gone through the program of getting off the streets, but still needed a place to live. That afternoon we helped out by washing the vehicles that Cass uses to transport their clients around. Wednesday was an exciting day! We started off the day by staining benches at the Scott Building and then staining raised garden boxes at Mom’s Place. That afternoon was even more exciting! We got to make mud mats with the homeless men! It was super exciting! Ellise and I made a multicolored mat with Bobby (whom we called Buffy). On Thursday morning we finished our work by making sandwiches for the local prisons. We worked so fast that we ran out of bread! As we were waiting for more bread to arrive, Ellise and I (we both hate seafood) were told to cut up almost 50 lbs of imitation crab. As if that wasn’t enough we had to cut up the most potent onions on the entire planet! 25 of them! We were balling by the third onion! Afterwards the leadership team went out for lunch at Fuddruckers, which was delicious! Overall the week was fantastic! God was ever present! :)
